Thoughts on Job Hunting Online
Sunday, June 1st, 2008I recently went through a job search and realized that as a Career Mentor (previous job as an AmeriCorps Member) we are not teaching the young or the young at heart how to leverage the tools that are available online for work search. my previous boss.. adore the guy… is a very progressive and adaptive person but is still teaching the ‘old fashioned’ ways to work search and not really touching on the hi-tech ways to network.
Yes, work search is almost all about who you know but that should not be limited to face to face people it should be also some of your online friends. So while I was job searching I was using my local contacts and such but that yielded me no results. I turned to Facebook and LinkedIn in hopes of finding someone on an extended network to talk to for a position. While that also didn’t work for me I learned more about how important an online social network presence is. The next time I’m looking for a job I’ll have an established network to talk to and know how to effectively use the tools that are hi-touch and hi-tech.
This short article was inspired by a post on how the next generation is not prepared to use the online tools available to work search, do college level work or collaborate on projects professionally. It is found at http://www.ed421.com/?p=343
